Cyprus Government moves to Guarantee UK citizens rights in the event of No Deal BREXIT.

Date: 14/02/19

Cyprus Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides yesterday informed his British counterpart Jeremy Hunt of his intention to safeguard the rights of UK citizens residing in Cyprus in the event of a “No Deal” BREXIT.

In a move that will provide certainty and reassurance to the tens of thousands of United Kingdom citizens who currently call Cyprus home, Mr.Christodoulides made an important statement yesterday.

“Cyprus stands ready to ensure that those British citizens residing in Cyprus presently, and until 29 March 2019, will be able to continue residing and enjoying the same rights as provided for in the withdrawal agreement,” he said.  He also called for a uniform approach across the EU adding, “At the same time, in certain areas, a uniform application of such rights by all member states must be secured, for the benefit of citizens, and as such measures are to be taken at Union level and reciprocal arrangements should be sought.”

It’s estimated that something around 65,000 citizens of the United Kingdom reside in Cyprus. The number may be much higher as many expats haven’t registered with the Cypriot authorities.

Such unilateral actions demonstrate that the Cyprus government is determined to keep Cyprus as a top destination for British citizens.  We welcome this positive approach as many Brits remain keen to invest in Cyprus property for holidays and as a permanent residence.
